Celebrate Matariki with cards designed by Geoff Popham inspired by Silver Ferns
This year we asked Māori artist and designer, Geoff Popham, to design our special edition ANZ MyPhoto Visa Debit cards.
Geoff and Silver Ferns, Maia Wilson, Tiana Metuarau and Paris Lokotui, sat down for a korero to reflect on what Matariki means to them. Inspired by their stories, Geoff created three bespoke pieces of art that explore their heritage and celebrate Te Ao Māori.

About Matariki and our special edition cards
Matariki is a time to reflect on what has come before, to celebrate and show gratitude for now, and to look forward with hope.
Themes of the past, present and future have featured throughout the kaupapa and stories of Matariki.
We also worked with Geoff to create Ngā Hihi O Matariki (ANZ’s Design of Matariki), which are brought to life across Aotearoa on ANZ ATMs. These designs centred around themes from traditional depictions of Matariki, presented through a modern digital medium.
About Geoff Popham and his work
Geoff identifies with Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine and Ngāti Ranginui. He grew up in the small community of Awarua, south of Kaikohe, in the far north, “close to our marae, and close to the culture”.
During his career, Geoff has worked with numerous companies and organisations to create digital branding and designs. His work includes whakairo (wood carving), pounamu (greenstone), paintings, illustrations and other artforms, many of which have been exhibited.
About the artworks
Maia Wilson
Maia is a proud wahine Māori who hails from Auckland and the Hokianga. The central focus of her MyPhoto card artwork are the maunga she connects with and has fond memories of in regard to Matariki. She shared a special Matariki memory atop Te Ahi-ka-a-Rakataura (Mount Albert) with her Māori unit to celebrate every year.
Tiana Metuarau
Central to Tiana’s MyPhoto card artwork is the tail of a whale, this represents her whānau’s connections to both Whangara-mai-i-Tawhiti, the story of ancestor Paikea, and her Cook Island whānau.
The designs used in the artwork take inspiration from patterns that can be found both in Aotearoa and Rarotonga. The manu (bird) designs represent her family. The hibiscus flower or kaute is a symbol of flourishing fortunes, new growth and a burst of beauty and colour.
Paris Lokotui
Paris shared amazing insight into how special Matariki can be with family. Whānau is everything for her and Matariki is a time to share kai and time with them making memories.
Paris is of Māori and Tongan descent, and Geoff wanted to show both cultures in the artwork and the connections. Paris has with the journey her whānau has been on to arrive here in Aotearoa. The waka hourua (voyaging canoe) is central to the artwork.
