‘Hi Mum’ scams
March 2025
Scammers are targeting parents by impersonating whānau and claiming they've lost their phone to explain why they’re using a new number. These messages may come from WhatsApp, new phone numbers, or new (or fake) social media accounts.
How this scam works
Scammers may impersonate your child claiming they've lost their phone. They may say:
- It's an emergency and they urgently need money, or
- They need help paying their bills, or
- They need money for something they want to buy.
How to stay safe
- Check if it’s really your child. Contact them directly using their normal number or try video calling.
- Use a family code word. Pick a word that everyone in your family knows so you can check if they’re the ones asking for help.
- Don’t give in to urgent requests for money, even if it sounds like an emergency. It’s okay to take your time and double-check the legitimacy of the contact.
- Get a ‘match’ with Confirmation of Payee when making any online payments to help check the account details match your family member’s name.
- Block the scammer’s number or account.
