Tips before you travel

Getting ready for a trip overseas? We’ve got tips for how you could plan and manage your money.

Overseas Travel Insurance

If you use your ANZ Airpoints™ Visa Platinum credit card to pay for at least half of your pre-paid travel expenses, you may be eligible for Overseas Travel Insurance (terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions apply).

Update your contact details

  • Make sure we have your current mobile phone number – if you'll use a different phone while overseas, let us know your international number.
  • You can update your phone number in ANZ Internet Banking or call us on 0800 269 296. Remember to update it again when you return.

What your mobile number may be used for

  • OnlineCode
  • Visa Secure for online purchases
  • ANZ Fraud Check texts

Please see our Privacy Statement for more information.

If using your New Zealand phone overseas, secure WiFi or roaming is needed for these services. Check with your phone company about roaming fees or packages.

If you won't have international phone coverage for the ANZ goMoney mobile app or Internet Banking, you can suspend OnlineCode for up to 90 days so overseas transactions can still be processed. In Internet Banking select Your settings > Change OnlineCode preferences.

Card expiry dates

If your card expires during your trip, apply for an early reissue at least three weeks before you leave New Zealand to allow for delivery.

Card PINs

Check that you know your PIN number on any cards you'll use overseas, otherwise you may not be able to use it to pay or withdraw cash. You can set or change a PIN in goMoney or Internet Banking under Manage cards.

Organise your travel money

It’s a good idea to travel with a mix of payment options like:

  • An ANZ Visa Debit and/or credit card
  • Apple Pay or Google Pay™ if you have a compatible device
  • Foreign cash – we don’t buy or sell foreign cash. You can use your ANZ Visa Debit or EFTPOS card to withdraw cash from overseas ATMs at a low currency conversion charge of 1.3%. Overseas transaction limits apply.

Protecting your money

  • Check you can access goMoney and Internet Banking to help track your spending and manage your banking overseas. Both include ANZ Card Manager to instantly block or unblock your cards if lost or stolen.
  • Card settings in goMoney let’s you decide how your ANZ Visa card or mobile wallet can be used by turning on or off certain ways to make purchases. For more information see Protecting your money while overseas.
  • Use unique, strong, and secure passwords for Internet Banking and secure your devices with passwords, PINs, or biometric identification.
  • Register for Voice ID or set up a PIN for ANZ Phone Banking in case you need to call us from overseas.

Tell us your travel plans

Let us know your travel dates and destinations to ensure your card use is legitimate. Even if you tell us you’re overseas, some transactions may be temporarily blocked while we check if it’s fraudulent.
