Using your ANZ cards overseas
Using your ANZ cards overseas
What you need to know about using your ANZ cards and accounts while you’re overseas, including at ATMs.
Benefits
How you can use your cards overseas
- You can use your ANZ credit— and ANZ Visa Debit— cards to make purchases in most countries. This includes Apple Pay— or Google Pay™— wherever contactless payments are accepted, however we recommend you take your plastic card as a backup.
- When using an ANZ Visa Debit card at an overseas EFTPOS terminal, press 'Credit', instead of ‘Cheque’ to access the linked everyday account.
- If you have an ANZ EFTPOS card, you can use your card to withdraw cash at ATMs displaying the Plus logo (as printed on the back of your EFTPOS card) using money in your everyday account. Overseas transactions limits and currency conversion charges apply—.
Using your PIN in the United States and European Union
In some countries, there are differences in how transactions are processed:
- United States – You may need to enter a five-digit ZIP code along with your PIN. Add a zero after your New Zealand postcode (e.g. 7011 becomes 70110).
- European Union – You may not be asked to enter a PIN due to different terminal settings.
Countries where you can’t use your card
Your ANZ Visa Debit or credit card will not work in these countries due to ANZ’s Sanctions Policy:
- Cuba
- Iran
- North Korea
- Syria
For more information see our Sanctions Policy (PDF 154KB).

Using ATMs overseas
- You can use your ANZ credit, ANZ Visa Debit or EFTPOS cards at any ATM displaying the Visa or Plus logo.
- Select Cheque or Savings if available. Otherwise, the ATM will access the linked everyday account.
- Be aware when checking account balances on screen or on a receipt. Some ATMs will display your balance in NZD while some may display it in local currency.
- The transaction amount for an overseas ATM withdrawal may change slightly between the time you withdraw the money and when the bank processes it, due to fluctuations in the foreign currency rate.
- Cash Advances may not be available at some ATMs when using your ANZ credit card, if you have a linked transactional account. Visit a bank branch displaying the Visa logo instead.
